That's why I'm easy....

by faaaantastic @ Thursday, 04. May, 2006 - 18:27:24

I think I'm too easy, and not just in a sexual sense ;) I think I need to be tougher with my classes. I enjoy having a laugh with the pupils, but I think I need to be better at getting them to know where to draw the line. Today I was taking a class and one of the girls said "I iwsh you were our teacher all the time - it's more fun", to which I replied "Yeah but are you learning anything?!", to which she replied "I don't know but we're having a laugh!". Hmmm. I'd rather they were learning something from me.

Went for a run after school - hay fever hell. Oh well, I'd better get on with preparing tomorrow's lessons.

Oh - last night's race went very well - I got a new personal best for 10km.

well maybe you then sneak some teaching in the back way!

On the plus point if they like you then they may be more conducive to listening to you.

You sound like a great teacher and in my own experience the classes with the teacher that made me smile are the ones I, not only enjoyed more, but learnt more!

oh and well done on the new PB!

Developing a raport is important but at the end of the day you don't need 30-odd teenage friends.

Aye that's what I reckon too. But now since I've started off being easy on them, it'll be hard as hell to change them. Oh well, the placement finishes in 3 weeks. I'll just have to be tougher at my next school.

But do you learn anything from the fun ones?! I want to make sure the pupils are taking in what I'm telling them.

Wow, well done!!

I'm still struggling around the 45 min mark.

I will use the feeble excuse that I am 10 years older than you......

We had a fab Maths teacher who was great fun yet really got us learning. It's not impossible to combine the two - but when he needed to be serious/strict, he was terrifying!

The way that seems to be accepted practice with teachers that I know is to be mega-stric the first couple of weeks with a new class, and then slowly loosen the reins. By that time they know your worst, and the don't want to go there again - so they really appreciate you at your best! Oh, and ALWAYS be mean to the kids you don't have - cos you could have them next year.

Good luck with that, it does sound like you put the pupils first which is a great thing for a teacher - too many times they end up just a bit jaded with the job and end up losing sight of the fact that all these young people are important as individuals, and that a single teacher can be the difference between real passion for a subject and utter dejection.
